Purse Pattern History - a Brief Introduction
Do you know about the history of purse patterns?
Paper patterns for clothing had their beginning in the middle of the 19th century and there was only one size - the seamstress had to alter the pattern to fit her subject. True pattern sizing began with Ebeneezer Butterick when his wife complained that it would be so much easier for her to make clothing for their child if she did not have to alter the pattern.
A brillant idea was formed that day as Mr. Butterick experimented with cardboard. He then came up with the idea of tissue paper, when made for easy shipping all over the country. Butterick also was the first to introduce detailed instructions for sewing and the rest, as they say, is history.
