How Leather Was Made in 2500 BC

Records exist of how leather was made by the Sumerians in 2500 BC which were used in bags, chariot wheels, and clothing. The process started with the animal skin being pounded and then cleaned to remove the flesh and fat.

Then the leather was soaked in urine or left to putrefy for several months and dipped in a salt solution. The remainder of the hair was then scraped off with th knife.

Next came dung being pounded into the skin or it was soaked in a solution of animal brains to cure. Cedar oil or tannin was rubbed into the hide and it was then stretched until it lost it's moisture.

If the above process does not lead you to become a leather free vegetarian, you have a stronger stomach than myself!
