If you buy a designer fake handbag in Italy, be prepared for the possibility of paying thousands of dollars in fines! Italy is getting tough, both with the counterfeiters themselves and the consumers who purchase the fake goods. The fines range from a low of $4,058 to a high of $12,174 and vendors are given actual jail time.
Tour companies are suppose to spread the word about the new tough law but tourist straight off the cruise ship are getting fined for buying fake designer bags from street vendors. Most other countries usually go after the counterfeiters themselves and police in other countries have commented that the fines are exorbitant.
Italy hopes to put a dent in the estimated $200 billion worldwide trade in illegal goods but critics are skeptical of making this new law work.
