Making Your Own Handbag in The 1960's

The free wheeling and alternative lifestyles of the 1960's had a trickle down effect even on the most conservative handbag owner! Women again took up crafts that had been abandoned and started making their own purses at home. Specialists shops that catered to fabric and handbag parts became very popular in Britian and America.

The "Bermuda" bag became the bag to have with it's exchangable exterior fabric cover. These handbags usually had wooden handles and the most popular had buttons to fasten the different covers on to the lining of the bag and handle.

Decoupage bags were made that involved glueing images on a wooden base and covering your design with clear shellac. Magazines of the 1960's provided a good source of pictures to use on your new bag!

We have come a long way from the 1960's and handbag patterns have especially evolved. The current revival in making your own handbag involves many crafts from felting to even staining the fabric with tea for a vintage look.
